We’re the leaders when it comes to eco-friendly corrugated boxes in more ways than one. First and foremost, corrugated cardboard’s sustainability is due in large part to its ability to be recycled. All our corrugated material (at times referred to as cardboard) is created using a combination of recycled and virgin fibers, and we bale all corrugated waste for reuse. Every package and display we provide is made from corrugated cardboard, meaning they are all completely recyclable — but that’s not all when it comes to how we demonstrate our dedication to sustainable principles.
When we relocated our manufacturing facility to Attleboro, Massachusetts, in 2013, we used the opportunity to renovate the building to be as eco-conscious as possible. This meant installing solar panels that enable us to power our plant 100% using renewable energy. We also installed energy-efficient LED lighting that further helped reduce our consumption of natural resources. At last count, these efforts have led to us avoiding more than 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Below are a few of our key sustainability initiatives we have adopted over the years.
In 2014, we initiated our investment in solar energy, marking our first steps towards greater sustainability and energy efficiency. Annually, our solar system yields an impressive 1.2 million kilowatt-hours of power. And ever since installing 2,538 solar panels on top of our roof, our energy production now supplies the equivalent of 8,000 households for an entire year.
Our facility is equipped with an underground scrap trench conveyor system, where all our corrugated scraps from production are collected and baled for recycling. We work closely with a certified recycling facility that adheres to rigorous environmental standards to handle the recycling of our baled scraps. This facility is equipped to handle and recycle corrugated materials safely and efficiently.
We pay attention to the details and try to reduce waste wherever possible, which is why we recycle all our plastic strapping with our chipper to make it easier to be reprocessed.
We use non-toxic, water-based inks and adhesives in the printing and manufacturing process of our corrugated products. These materials do not pose any harm to the environment or human health during recycling.
Within our facility, we’ve adopted LED lighting across the board, complemented by 115 skylights strategically positioned for optimal natural light integration. Our LED system intelligently controls brightness in response to natural light levels, maximizing our reliance on skylights to reduce energy consumption. Additionally, motion-sensor activated LEG fixtures further enhance our energy conservation efforts by dimming or turning off when no activity is detected. These meticulous measures, though seemingly minor, collectively play a pivotal role in substantially saving our overall energy usage.
In an effort to enhance air quality and promote a healthier environment, we’ve made a conscious choice to employ battery-powered forklifts instead of gas or diesel-fueled ones. This strategic decision minimizes the emission of harmful chemicals and pollutants into the air, aligning with our commitment to maintaining a cleaner and healthier workplace for all.
At Abbott-Action, our team specializes in sustainable system design—an approach that carefully considers environmental, social, and economic impacts from inception to product lifecycle conclusion. Our team is equipped with expertise and tools to effectively evaluate packaging and displays to determine sustainable solutions that minimize the product’s overall carbon footprint. We take sustainability seriously; hence, we’ve invested in comprehensive training and resources, enabling us to fluently navigate the sustainability landscape. In fact, we align our practices with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly emphasizing the SDG of “responsible consumption and production.” This principle guides our material selection, ink usage, structural design, production methods, and delivery approaches, fostering a sustainable supply chain that seamlessly closed the loop from inception to completion.
Our corrugated products are primarily made from paper pulp (raw materials) derived from trees, which is a recyclable material. Paper pulp is widely accepted by recycling facilities and is considered one of the easiest materials to recycle. Specifically, our corrugated sheets supplier, NewCorr Packaging, is dedicated to sourcing raw materials from responsibly managed forests. This commitment aligns with our Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C196756) certification. This certification further underscores our pledge to responsible sourcing, ensuring our products not only meet high-quality standards but also contribute positively to environmental preservation.
We take pride in providing packaging certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®). This certification reflects our dedication to promoting responsible and sustainable forestry practices and to insuring that our paper suppliers also adhere to these high standards. In 2025, Abbott-Action achieved certification to the SFI 2022 Chain-of-Custody Standard, an internationally recognized certification that tracks forest fiber content from its source through production, ensuring that our corrugated packaging is made from responsibly sourced or recycled materials.
